addictive process. I'm your host, Dr. Donnelly Snipes. In this video, we're going to define

addiction using the new 2019 definition from the American

Society of Addiction Medicine.

We'll briefly review changes in the brain and neurotransmitters caused by addictive behaviors.

We'll learn how triggers become conditioned to produce cravings and review the different

stages of addiction and recovery.

So let's start out with that definition. I was thrilled to see that in 2019 the American Society of Addiction Medicine did broaden their definition of addiction.

According to this definition, addiction is a chronic medical disease,

which is influenced in its development by genetic, neurological, psychosocial, and environmental factors.
