Summary

Elizabeth Smart was 14 years old in June 2002. She was asleep in a bedroom with her younger sister when her life would change forever.

Brian David Mitchell broke into the Smart home and abducted Elizabeth. She was held captive and subjected to rape and abuse. Brian’s wife Wanda Barzee was part of the plan. The couple even took Elizabeth out in public - she was photographed at a party months after she was abducted.

Thankfully in March 2003, an astute member of the public recognized Elizabeth in Sandy, Utah - even though she was wearing a grey wig and a veil. Police were called and astoundingly, Elizabeth was reunited with her family.

In this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast, we tell Elizabeth Smart’s story and run through her amazing life following her recovery.

you guys, but I haven't spoken to Olivia really for like at least a week because she had her

0:38.0

big trip to Japan and she's finally back. We got back yesterday at 10 a.m. after a massive,

0:43.1

massive day of travel. Like the flight's only 10 hours, but because we got to get the bullet train

0:47.1

from Osaka to Tokyo, they're waiting around the airport. Like it was just by the time we walked

0:51.2

in the door at my house. I think it was like 24 hours of travel. So it was a big, big, big day.

0:56.3

But it was so good. Like, I'll just give a quick recap because I know probably not everyone cares

1:00.1

that much, but the first- Some people care. And I had so many messages from people because I posted

1:05.8

a few photos and I had so many nice messages from people wanting to know more. As a reminder,

if you don't want to hear us talk about this, there's a timestamp in the episode description.

So you can fast forward right to the start of the story. Okay, go on. So the day we were leaving,

1:19.0

which was like, it's all a blur now. I feel like we're over there for a year and we're there

1:22.1

for like eight days or something like that. But the first day that we went to fly out, I worked,

1:26.8

my alarm was set for 2.50 a.m. woke up, looked at my phone and the first thing I saw was a text saying,

1:32.4

sorry, your flight's been cancelled. And I was like, oh my goodness. So I was like, what do we do?

1:36.8

What do we do? Anyway, but it was such a ridiculous text because it said like I'm paraphrasing,

1:41.8

but it was sorry, your flight's been cancelled. We're trying to see if we can find you another flight

1:45.4

will keep you posted. But when I actually logged on and looked at my flight, they had found us

1:49.2

another flight. So it was such an unnecessary panic really in the end. And we ended up going
