Summary

In this episode, I’m joined by psychologist and author Dr. Jean Twenge to talk about the seven essential conversations to have with kids before they get a device. We break down what kids need to understand about privacy, posting, and why nothing online is ever truly private. We also discuss the tech rules that matter most—like no devices in bedrooms at night—and how to set limits without panic, guilt, or power struggles. I WROTE MY FIRST BOOK! Welcome to Raising Good Humans. I'm Dr. Lisa Pressman. And today we're talking with Professor

0:15.5

Gene Twangy. She's a professor of psychology at San Diego State University.

0:25.3

She's the author of more than 150 scientific publications, and her latest book,

0:29.1

Ten Rules for Raising Kids in a High Tech world, is out now.

0:31.4

This is such a controversial conversation.

0:36.1

What we talked about today were the seven conversations that you need to have with your kids before you embark on any technology,

0:38.2

regardless of age. So we're talking about those seven conversations. And then the fundamental rules

0:44.9

that we absolutely need to have in the household. We also talked about how Dr. Twangy has an age

0:51.3

recommendation, which I think is a little bit tricky. You need to take into account

0:55.3

your own household. We can't do that for you. So of course, researchers and psychologists are going

1:00.4

to err on the side of the oldest age possible to stretch the time between, you know, childhood

1:08.1

and exposure to social media, for example. But we also look to you. I mean,

1:14.3

ultimately, this is a personal decision. You have to also think about your bandwidth, how much

1:19.0

support you have, how much support you can give your kids, and who they are and what their

1:23.2

temperament is. So I don't want you to be so stuck on an age, but at least when you hear what

1:29.7

experts say about age recommendations, it sort of pushes you in the direction of just like,

1:37.3

don't do it as early as you think. I don't want anybody to panic. You know your kids and their

1:43.0

capacity and your capacity. And that is a

1:46.0

huge factor that cannot be replicated in studies and it isn't something that we can universally

1:53.4

say is the thing. So I hope you enjoy this episode. I hope it doesn't stress you out and gives

1:59.7

you more confidence to have rules that make sense to you, conversations that will be helpful. And as always,
