Now, in case you missed the program for today, Friday, you'll maybe have missed the news that somebody that I've known for many, many, many, many years.

In fact, I go back more years with this bloke than I care

to mention. Without him, people wouldn't have gone out and worked on the radio in Vienna.

He was a prolific writer to my programme, and he used to write and keep us up to date with

what had gone on in Vienna. He talked about the Eurovision Song Contest.

He was a radio stalwart.

Paul Hollingdale died the other day.

And my friend Paul Easton sent me a text saying,

no doubt you'd heard.

I hadn't heard, actually.

But he'd been on, I think, oh God,

I think he started on Radio 2 in 1967.

Then he was on Forces Radio, which I think was BFBS, Radio Luxembourg.

He did the Light programme.

And he also worked at BBC Radio Brighton.

But it was for Blue Danube Radio that I have to thank Paul because he went over to Vienna and offered the ORF, which is their equivalent to the BBC, the opportunity of having an English-speaking radio station.

Two hours in the morning, two hours at lunchtime and two hours in the evening a news programme with a little team run by Telia Herald.

Telia Herald was English, well she is English,

but she was fluent German, so they were able to get away with it. It was entirely engineer operated within the early days, engineers who didn't speak a word of English, so it was all sign

language to start the record you waved your finger in the air, to give the microphone, you just wait,
