Back in 2015, a state legislator in Texas by the name of Harold Dutton wrote a bill

that became a law.

The law allowed Texas to take over schools that were deemed to be failing.

Dutton himself went to his school that once upon a time was very good.

It's called Wheatley and it's in a poor part of Houston.

In the years since Dutton graduated, the school hasn't been performing well.

And when the law passed, the state jumped.

As of this month, the state of Texas has taken over the entire Houston Independent School

District and put in place its own school board.

Harold Dutton is thrilled.

What this is about is changing the outcome for thousands and thousands of kids, particularly

those in Northeastern.

Of course, he's just one person.

There are nearly 300 schools in the district and all that that entails.
