So let's begin in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

And let's call to mind all those we've promised to pray for. Throughout our lives, we will always have struggles against temptations for what we know to be detrimental to ourselves and others.

Temperance is a virtue which counteracts these temptations.

Temperance enables us to keep from doing what is wrong,

even when we have strong feelings for it.

In other words, temperance is what keeps us from sinning even when we want to.

As a practical aid to advancing in temperance,

it's good to do a basic review of certain temptations

against which many of us struggle.

Basically what we're going to do here tonight and tomorrow is to look at the seven

deadly sins and see how they are the roots of our disordered desires and then also the virtues that overcome them.

Pride is the beginning of all sin.

We can all check this one off.

So this is where we must begin.
