And do we progress at all as a species? All it takes to undo decades of progress and enlightenment

is a couple of backwards reactionary demagogues to stand up and start banging ancient drums

and all those old hatreds come bubbling back to the surface.

British schools now subject to multifarious protests against the apparently heinous crime of

teaching young people that gay people exist. Whatever next. Um, and, of course, domestic

British politics. But also, do you buy that story? I'm not actually accusing anyone

of being economical with the actuality, but this story about the four and a half grand

bottle of wine accidentally served up in a restaurant? I don't know. I'd smell a rat, which is quite

worrying because it's a steak restaurant. It is four minutes after ten. And the other story is one of which the millionaire Brexit supporter Aaron Banks, it was reported last night, spent £450,000 on a luxury lifestyle for Nigel Farage.

I sort of wonder whether it's worth pointing out no one will care.

Absolutely brilliant journalism by Matt Fry, driving a coach

and horses, of course, through Mr Farage's various claims about being skinned or anti-elite or

any of those things. But nobody cares because we've reached that point now where having your

prejudice is validated is such heady, hey beer, such a strong brew, such an

intoxicant, that you'll forgive your dealer anything.
