And today we'll discuss a harmful myth about the U.S. social safety net, which is the idea

that trust funds for Medicare and Social Security

are always about to go bankrupt. Now, when people claim that Medicare and Social Security

are in deep and urgent crisis and that soon we won't be able to pay for the benefits that

people were promised and paid into, it sounds really bad, but what is really going on?

Now, one of the things that drives this narrative is annual reports that are released by the

U.S. government detailing the financial status of the trust funds supporting these programs,

which then fuels this kind of constant concern about their solvency. And recently, the U.S.

released one of these reports on the state of some of the trust
