There's a lot of great critique of cost-benefit analysis and putting a price on life, the problems with that approach.

But we have often tended to assume that the assessment of the risks is sort of a neutral technical exercise that

just generates the basic facts that then can be weighed up in various ways depending on

your risk management priorities, right, and run through your cost benefit machine.

And part of my argument is that we need to denaturalize our whole understanding of risk from the beginning.

There's no neutral approach here, right?

Risk is not some trans-historical concept.

It has a past.

It has a public life.

It has a politics and a political economy that we really need to investigate.
