Summary

How do you know what’s right when there’s no religious rulebook anymore? This week I’m talking about how I’m rebuilding my moral compass and working through a bunch of ethical dilemmas — like whether my decision to publicly call out Christian podcasters felt morally aligned, what I’d do if I found out a friend was cheating (or being cheated on), and the ethics of parents doing online sex work. I also get into cancel culture, vaccine mandates, the Whitney Leavitt hate train, and when airing dirty laundry crosses a line. Spoiler: I’m often still torn. We have a new look, a little bit of a new feel around here on the Patreon, and most importantly, we are doing a book club.

0:16.9

I'm so, so excited about this. I have been brainstorming ways to make this Patreon more interactive

0:25.9

and the book club just feels like the perfect thing. In case you missed it, our first book is called

0:31.6

The Book of Longings. I've had this on my list forever. I've had multiple people recommend it and just for some reason haven't gotten around to it.

If that doesn't hook you, I don't know what will. Our topic for today, though, is ethics and

0:58.8

values. We are having an ethics and values seminar. One of my very favorite episodes of the office is

1:06.6

when they have an ethics and values seminar, so I like can't stop thinking about that as I've been

1:11.6

preparing for this episode. I have noticed a lot of things come up in my life where I have found

1:17.9

myself in a sort of moral dilemma. And it got me realizing that in deconstructing my faith,

1:25.7

I've talked a lot about and I've explored, okay, what do I believe

1:29.7

now? And I've explored that in the sense of, do I believe in God? Do I believe in some energetic

1:35.0

force? Do I believe in reincarnation? Do I believe in Jesus? Do I consider myself atheist or agnostic

1:41.3

or secular humanist or secular Buddhist. But what I have explored less

1:47.2

is what my own moral compass is and what my values are. I was actually talking about this today

1:56.2

in therapy. This topic came up of how I'm pretty frequently finding myself in these dilemmas.

2:05.1

And the one that is top of mind today is surprise, surprise, about a TikTok video.
