Haley Rawl, and something strange has been going on with me. I have suddenly become deeply

fascinated in pioneer history, in Mormon pioneer history, all of my years as a devout Mormon,

and I really didn't give a fuck. And now suddenly

I am just eating it up. I genuinely wonder not just to be snarky if having it so shoved down my throat

as a Mormon, because in case you didn't know, Mormons are really into family history, genealogy, which for many Utah Mormons,

at least, and some other Mormons, but for me, that overlapped with pioneer history because

a lot of Utah Mormons have pioneer ancestors. And I always just kind of saw those things as

a bit of a package deal like

learn about your genealogy learn about the pioneer history and it was so emphasized and

encouraged and it always felt boring and irrelevant and I just didn't care about it and maybe now

I've had enough time away from all of that to

find an interest in it on my own. It was actually just Pioneer Day on July 24th, Thursday,

in Utah. It is a state holiday that commemorates the arrival of the first group of Mormon

pioneers in Salt Lake City. So they came with Brigham

Young. They got to the Salt Lake Valley on July 24th. And now it's a full-blown holiday.

A lot of people get work off and there's celebrations and fireworks. It's sort of like a

second Fourth of July, which as someone pointed out to me because I made a reel about Pioneer Day.

And someone was like, isn't it bizarre how Pioneer Day has become sort of like an American

celebration similar to the Fourth of July when the pioneers were actually fleeing another

state, Illinois, because the governments didn't want them
