Dr. Tara Regan is the Executive Director and Founder of Autism Grown Up, an online non-profit organization based in North Carolina. She's a sibling to 2 autistic adult brothers (Tyler and Tanner) and has been working in the autism community for over a decade. Dr. Regan has a background in direct care practice, social work, and special education. She integrates all she's learned across disciplines into writing and speaking about adulthood, the lifespan, and collaborations within the autism community.

Sure. Well, it's so great to be talking with you today, Holly, and even in this format, too. I was so

excited when we connected because we're actually in the same area. We both live in North Carolina

in the Triangle area, and I am involved in the autism field in a couple of different ways. So

personally, I have two brothers on the

spectrum, Tyler and Tanner, Tanner, Tanner, 20. So we are in the throes of adulthood right now.

So that's been a huge part of my journey as well into the professional side of things when it comes to autism.

I tried and worked in a few different areas from camps,

like down here in North Carolina,

we have a camp called Camp Royal for individuals on the spectrum of all ages.

And then since from there, I've been involved in direct care work,

social work, my master's, and then I just finished my PhD

in special education, focusing on the needs of teens on the spectrum as they grew up and

navigate adulthood, which was really perfect timing because both my brothers were teens

at that period of time. And so once I finished up my PhD, they were both

in adulthood. We were trying to figure out what life after high school was going to look like

for my youngest brother. And we had also been on the Medicaid IDD waiver for almost 10 years at that

point and had gotten off the wait list, got a couple slots for both
