Summary

Marc Silber has been a photographer most of his life, and actually turned pro at age 13 when he sold one of his images to a teacher. He attended the San Francisco Art Institute with fellow alumna Annie Leibovitz. Marc loves to help others improve their photography, so in 2009 began his video series Advancing Your Photography, where he’s had the great fortune to interview some of the world’s best photographers. Marc’s new book is titled Create: Tools from Seriously Talented People to Unleash Your Creative Life.  Photographer Links:    Education Resources:   Candid Frame Resources   Download the free Candid Frame app for your favorite smart device. Over the past year, I've been weaning myself off of social media. I took Facebook off my phone and only check on it briefly in the morning on my computer. I deleted 95% of my subscriptions on YouTube. What time I do spend

0:24.5

with social media is about 15 minutes in the morning, sharing posts and uploading an image to

0:30.2

Instagram. Since making that choice, I realized how much time I'd absently wasted browsing through those apps and services.

If you had asked me what I was looking at, I might have told you that I spent some of that time looking for inspiration.

only comes to life when you put in the time and do the work. And that's what successful photographers,

writers, filmmakers, and musicians do. And it's this process of seeing something through from inspiration to creation.

That's the subject of Mark Silver's new book, Create, tools from seriously talented people

to unleash your creative life.

1:29.4

Mark, who you may recognize from his popular YouTube channel,

1:33.0

interviewed a diverse selection of creative people to gain insight into what they do,

1:38.2

to make creativity an essential part of their lives.

1:42.1

Many of them began by making the simple choice to not accept a false premise that too many people buy into.

1:50.0

They just didn't buy that, that premise that you sort of separate your life into, you know, at this age, I'm creative, and then later on I got to get down to work,

2:01.6

and that creativity kind of goes by the boards, or even more, you know, to dissect your life into bits of time

2:09.6

where you only have 12 minutes a day where you're on Instagram, and that's your creative time.

2:15.6

And they just didn't buy that. The book offers

2:19.3

gems of wisdom and helpful tips on how to lead a creative life. One of them includes

having a state of mind that nurtures rather than stifles creativity. But David made a point,

in the process, in the artistic process, in the creative
