Summary

Born in Brooklyn in 1968, Sasha Waters Freyer makes non-fiction films about outsiders, misfits, and everyday radicals.  Trained in photography and the documentary tradition, she fuses original and found footage in 16mm film and digital media.  Most recently, she has crafted lyrical explorations of , documentaries on the of her youth, and essay films on the cultural and political legacies of the .  Her newest work is a feature documentary on American photographer Garry Winogrand. Gary Winogrand is a legendary street photographer whose work influenced generations of photographers.

Though he achieved recognition for his work during his lifetime, his work fell out of favor for a time,

especially as the fine art world's interest in street photography waned.

But he was saved from obscurity thanks to a series of posthumous exhibitions of his work,

some of which included photographs from the thousands of roles of unprocessed film

and processed film from which contact sheets had never been made.

Books and exhibitions have helped to secure his place in the history of photography, but there was a

scarcity of content about the photographer himself. But there were no diaries, no substantive material

to gain a better understanding of such an important photographer. That was part of the challenge

faced when she decided to make Winnegrant the subject of her next film, Gary Winnegrant,

all things are photographical. Though she interviewed many people who knew Gary,

it was the discovery of a personal recording of Winnegrant and another

famous photographer that offered a glimpse into the man behind the camera.

Early on when I was starting the first round of interviews, I discovered that the photographer

Jay Maisel had recorded audio tape conversations with Gary when he visited him in Texas

in 1975.

And those had gone to the archives.

Gary's archives are at the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson, at the University of Arizona
