Summary

Donna Pinckley, a native of Louisiana, received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in photography from Louisiana Tech University and a Master of Fine Arts in photography from University of Texas at Austin. She has received Visual Artist Fellowships from the Mid-America Arts Alliance/NEA and the Arkansas Arts Council. Her project Sticks and Stones examines the negative comments that some interracial couples are subject to. The project is more than just about racism, the project profiles strong people who choose to rise above hate and bigotry to build lives together based on love and respect. Pinckley’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally in over 200 solo/juried shows and also included in several public collections, such as the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans, Louisiana, the University of Vera Cruz at Xalapa, Vera Cruz, Mexico, and the Photographic Collection at the Harry Ransom Center, University of Texas at Austin. She is currently Associate Professor at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway, Arkansas. Race has been a topic of conversation a lot in the past year,

and in a political season, much of the discussion can be polluted by a lot of misinformation, posturing, and blaming. Any healthy conversation that can be

had about such issues quickly devolved into issues of us and them, right and wrong. And it's

easy to forget that ultimately it's about people. Men and women who are trying to achieve

better lives for themselves and for their children.

We are not so different as the pundits would make us believe we are.

Such issues are particularly a personal one for couples who choose to cross the color line when it comes to love.

And those couples are the subject of today's guest photographer Donna Pinkley.

Her project Sticks and Stones is a portrait series in which she photographs interracial couples

and the negative comments that they have been subject to because of their relationship.

These hateful comments are written on the bottom of each print and show some people at their

worst.

But the images also demonstrate people for whom love allows them to rise above such hate

It's heartening to see people who don't allow other people's ignorance or hatred to deter them from finding love and happiness.
