Summary

Bruce Smith is a master fine-art nude, high-fashion and glamour photographer as well as a long-time friend of the show. For decades, he has produced amazing work for commercial and editorial clients from all over the world including some of the most popular and recognized fashion brands in bridal wear and swimwear. Inspired by the phrase, a picture is worth a thousands words, Bruce went through his archive of images to produce a new book 130K, a collection of 130 of his best and most iconic photographs. The books is more than just a retrospective of his work. He saw it as a personal exploration of his own creative life, to assess not just the quality of the work, but to see what all the sacrifices both professional and personal had resulted in. His work on the book provided us an opportunity to talk about not only the editing process, but also examine how a photographer, especially a professional photographer of so many years, assesses his work and his career and his life. Bruce Smith has recently moved to France from England, where he continues to work for his clients, as well as teach a new generation of fashion and beauty photographers through his hands-on workshops. To begin this season, I thought I'd reconnect with an old friend of the show, Bruce Smith,

0:50.1

a fashion and glamour photographer who I've interviewed twice before.

Since the last time we've talked, he's moved from England to France, which is now his home

base, both for his fashion and beauty photography as well as his photographic workshops.

But what spurred this conversation was a new book that he's working on, which he titled

1:10.9

130K.

1:12.6

Now, you've no doubt heard the term, a picture is worth a thousand words.

1:17.6

Well, for this book, he edited down some of his best work over decades into a select of

1:23.6

130 photographs, hence the 130k. But what interested me about this book was the editing process.

1:32.8

We touched on this before on the show, but I was curious as to how does a photographer,

1:37.4

like Bruce, who's been shooting for decades and has so many amazing photographs, edit his work

1:43.8

down to a select view.

1:46.1

I mean, I have a hard enough time editing down on vacation, much less work produced over

1:50.7

four decades, but that's just what he did.
