Summary

#344. Taylor Grieger returns to the podcast to talk about how sailing saved his life. Taylor is a military vet, a former US Navy rescue swimmer, who suffered from severe PTSD on his return to civilian life. He returned to a childhood love of sailing, and with two friends, set out to sail around Cape Horn and talk about PTSD for a film called HELL OR HIGH SEAS. Taylor has since started the American Odysseus Sailing Foundation (amodsailing.org) to help other vets and first responders recover from PTSD through sailing. Catch the film at hellorhighseas.com. -- Join the conversation on The Quarterdeck, 59 North's 'deep dives on the art of seamanship.' Hey friends, welcome back to the show. I'm your host, Andy Schell. If you notice my voice is a little

0:05.4

scratchy, it's because I've got COVID. Last week, Axel and I spent the week Monday to Friday

0:10.9

in the hospital. If you followed our Instagram, you'll see that it was quite the scare.

0:16.2

Initially, he had a seizure from a very high fever on Monday, which apparently is a thing with kids,

0:22.8

but even more of a thing with kids that have COVID.

0:25.3

So that was really scary.

0:26.5

And then there was a meningitis scare that he had in the hospital, which was a little bit

0:31.5

traumatic given that he had meningitis when he was born.

0:34.4

Turned out that was a red herring, as the doctor described.

0:38.4

And we were released on Friday. Axel is back to his normal crazy self. And aside from a scratchy voice and a lingering

0:44.1

cough, I am none the worse for wear either. So one week lost to COVID, but hey, at least we

0:51.8

had it and are over it. By the way, I was triple vaccinated as well.

0:55.3

But I guess this Omicron thing is getting to everybody.

0:58.6

I don't think I know anybody now in Sweden that has not had it in the last couple weeks.

1:04.4

So there you go.

1:05.9

This episode, Taylor, he's been on the podcast before about doing this round Cape Horn,

1:13.1

Heller High Seas movie. And this one is really cool because there's not that many people

1:18.5

that come on the show that are, kind of have been on before and talk about this really major

1:24.4

thing they're trying to accomplish. Then they go and do it, and then they get to talk about it after the fact. I think Matt Rutherford's probably the biggest example of that. He kind of started the podcast with me back in the day, did this around the America's thing, and here he is now, having done all the things he's done. Well, Taylor is another example that in the same vein as Matt setting out to do something that not a lot of people

1:44.5

thought was possible. And not only is it possible, but he did it for a really cool reason,

1:50.3

getting the word out about PTSD for returning vets. And it's a thing that's near and dear to Taylor's

1:56.2

heart. We talked a lot about his PTSD and his depression stemming from that. I touched a little bit on my own experiences, although they're very different. But it's all mental health. And you know how I feel about this if you heard the podcast for a while. So this is a really important episode. I hope you enjoy it. I hope you listen to what Taylor has to say. And I hope you support his project. So yeah, check it out. Speaking of the project,
