Summary

#345. Matt Rutherford (again!). Matt & Andy shoot the shit about sailing origins, how far we've come since 2011, his big-ass schooner refit, missing solo sailing, and Matt's upcoming Greenland expedition with his Ocean Research Project. Want to sail with Matt? He's looking for a female mate to work alongside him, his first mate, and scientist Nicole Trenholm for the duration of the summer. Low pay, high adventure! Contact oceanresearchproject.org to apply.

Hey friends, welcome back to the podcast. I'm your host, Andy Schell. I am sitting in mission control.

0:05.6

It is snowing like crazy outside today, so I have a nice view of the snowy field and forest in front of me.

0:11.0

And we're back with another episode, this one with me and Matt Rutherford, a probably the most frequent guest we've ever had on the podcast.

0:18.4

Matt, of course, you know him, doesn't need an introduction. We talk about

0:22.5

his latest expedition to Greenland coming up this summer, and he is looking for a mate for that

0:27.6

trip, specifically a female, so that Nikki, the scientist on board, doesn't have to be the only

0:32.6

woman on board the ship. So Matt's looking for a hardworking, qualified female sailor out there. The pay is

0:39.4

low. The adventure is high. It is paid. But get in touch with Matt through oceanresearchproject.org

0:46.9

or you can get in touch with me and I'll get you in touch with Matt. So if you want to go sailing,

0:51.6

I think it's a four or five month commitment going from

0:54.3

Annapolis up to Greenland and back on one of his science expeditions. Yeah, sounds pretty cool.

1:00.0

If I was a young sailor out there looking for something to do, I would definitely go for it.

1:04.3

So check it out. If you can't sail with Matt, but you want to help out the cause,

1:08.4

go to oceanresearch project.org, and you can donate there to his

1:13.4

501c3 nonprofit. As for 59 North, our biggest thing going on right now is the evolution of the

1:19.4

quarterdeck. This podcast, indeed, was recorded live in front of quarterdeck members that

1:23.9

wanted to join in and listen in. We do our quarterdeck podcast every Thursday,

1:29.4

live on video for quarterdeck members, and those are published on Mondays. So check out

1:33.5

the quarterdeck podcast anywhere you get your podcasts. We've launched two additional trips in the

1:39.9

fall of 2022 over in the Baltic. So I think starting in August, we're going to go from Mastron on the west coast of Sweden to Orland in the Baltic and then back again. We've also added an all-women's trip from Mastron down to England. I believe that's already full. And I don't even think it's online yet. That's been a big, big response to that. Nikki, Mia and Emma are going be running that. And if it is already full, even if it's not, I think that'll be something we do

2:04.1

more often since there seems to be demand for it. But if you want to sail in 2022, join us in the Baltic on Ice Bear because we've got openings there. Of course, both boats, the new boat Falcon and East Bjorn or are open for booking in 2023.

All that stuff's on the website at 59-north.com.
