Summary

Marcus Mumford of Mumford & Sons talks about his newly released cover version of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’, in aid of War Child UK and The Grenfell Foundation. John Gibbons hosts as Marcus goes in depth on the choice of song and why he is so deeply involved in supporting both War Child UK and The Grenfell Foundation. Donate to War Child & Grenfell Foundation here. Listen to/download the single here. Also, a note from Marcus… “Here’s a song for you, because it feels like the right time to get it out. “All record royalties and record company profits from this song will go to Grenfell Foundation and War Child UK from this song will go to Grenfell Foundation and War Child UK. These are uncertain times for so many people, and we get that. “We’re trying to pursue a ‘both/and’ approach – to find out how we can support our literal neighbours, whilst also thinking of those further away who need our help more than ever. I work with both organisations, I have been in contact with them throughout the COVID pandemic, they’re doing amazing work supporting vulnerable people, but it’s really hard right now. “I recorded this song after a conversation with my dear friend Jason Sudeikis, as I’ve been scoring his unreleased television show, Ted Lasso. It may still end up in the show, but we’ve had it up our sleeve for a couple of months. For lots of reasons we wanted it just to be out in the world sooner rather than later, so here it is, with love.” Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Skype by Marcus Mumford, who's got a very special new release but first all Marcus

0:13.7

thanks very much. That's a pleasure nice to talk to him. So a couple of days ago

0:18.8

fairly out of nowhere where it certainly was for me you've released this rather beautiful version of if you'll never walk alone that you've put on YouTube and you're using it to to raise money for a couple of charities that I know are fairly close to your heart so I mean first of all why did you

0:34.4

pick the song and why have you sort of chosen to do this now?

0:38.0

It's a completely bizarre timing but I'm doing the score for a TV show and I have been for the last couple months and the guy whose show it is,

0:44.9

called Jason Sadekis, he's an American comedian, he was on SNL and that's where we met him.

He asked me while I was writing the music for the TV show to record a version of You'll Never Walk Alone for the end of one of the episodes.

So in my studio I just, I did it with my friend Ruben James and we recorded it in January and we've had it up our

1:05.2

sleeves for the TV show which is still ongoing and and then and then all this stuff with the

1:11.2

coronavirus started happening and I emailed the

1:15.2

label, the record label last week and said do you think we should just put this out

1:18.7

and I had a call with the Grenfell Foundation and I had an email from War Child because I work with both

1:25.8

those organizations and both of them are going to really struggle over the next little

1:29.0

while to look after their beneficiaries of course with this stuff going on so we started thinking about ways to

1:35.1

raise money for them and this felt like an obvious one so then I spoke to

1:38.1

Jason and said look do you mind if I nick it off the TV show and we just put it out

1:41.5

and all the proceeds go to these two

1:43.2

organizations and he very kindly said of course he doesn't mind at all so it may

1:47.3

still go in the TV show but we had it up our sleeves and it's a song I love and

1:51.2

you know I know it's very loved around the world particularly by you lot.
