Police were helpless. A suspect behind the wheel of a stolen tank was on a

rampage, plowing through rush hour traffic, destroying anything in its way,

downing power lines and light poles.

The pictures were shocking, terrifying, and simply unbelievable.

A 60-ton runaway tank plowing through the streets stopping at nothing.

Would you believe this was in San Diego in 1995 a town known for its beachside

taco stands and its year-round warm weather became the backdrop for one of the most bizarre and destructive police chases in American history.

But before we get to what's become known as the American Tank Rampage, we first need to understand the story of 35 year old Sean Nelson.

Sean grew up in the Claremont neighborhood of San Diego after graduating from Madison High School

he joined the Army. He went on to serve a couple of years in what was then West Germany

his unit a tank battalion. Sean was known as a bit of a rule breaker.

He had a couple of disciplinary problems and was honorably discharged in the early 80s
