children to be independent thinkers who are empathetic beings. It's a hard thing to have empathy for other people when you are

constantly being told to shame anyone who has an opinion that is different from yours and that

somehow the bearer of opposing opinions is a bad person. But that's what's happening in this

political climate. So as a parent,

I've got two girls, 11 and 15. And like those of you who are parents or who are going to be

parents one day, you may be considering how do I talk to my kids about politics? And that's what

we're going to talk about today. Because one of the greatest joys I have as a parent is hearing in conversation how my kids interface with the world. So I like listening to them talk about their friends and their conversations and their classes and their thoughts and how

those thoughts and feelings become belief and then knowledge about the political world.

Because a political climate we are in is so highly charged that it is incumbent upon us to,

number one, hear our kids out and figure out what they're

hearing and from whom they're hearing it. And number two, give them some sense of safety

and control about the world. Because as we go through a political rough patch where there is

so much uncertainty in a close presidential election, where the two

candidates seem to despise each other and make claims that if the other is elected, it will
