It may surprise you to know that Valentine's Day has not always been candy flowers and cards.

According to Roman legend, around 600 BC, King Amulis ordered Romulus and Riemus, his twin nephews, and founders of Rome, to be thrown into the Tiber River to drown.

A servant took pity on them, however, and placed them inside a basket on the river instead.
