In a survey by the Public Religion Research Institute, when people were asked, when people

claim to be Christian and commit acts of violence in the name of Christianity, do you believe

they're really Christian or not?

90% of evangelical Christians said no, those people were not Christian.

Only 57% of them, however, believed that when asked the same thing of Muslims,

that they were actually doing things in the name of Islam and they were proper Muslims.

So this special exception that evangelicals gave themselves doesn't apply to other religions and ideologies. And why does this matter?

Well, how can you critique an ideology when anything that has been done in its name is sort of hand-waved

away this easily? What an easy way to let yourself off the hook for the vile and evil things that are

said and done in the name of your faith? And this idea that Christianity is innocent of everything,

every crime that's been done by its adherence,

I find that ridiculous and completely untenable.
