It lay like memories on every surface, gathered in every corner, hid in every dark recess.

Yet it wasn't the first thing to strike Michael as he opened the door and stepped into the small lobby.

It was the complete sense of absence that shocked him and held him motionless for a while

as the door swung back into its frame with a dull thud.

He tossed his bags down beside the empty coat stand and caught his reflection in the gray

surface of the mirror, saw how haggard it was, his face drawn and sallow,

his corn-silk hair beginning to turn gray at the temples. Turning away quickly, shaffling the keys

from hand to hand nervously, he began to make his way through the house, opening doors and windows
