Well, several years ago, my wife Don and I went to Italy and I was so excited about going.

I had gone years before when I was a college kid

but I didn't really know much of what to do.

Like I bumped around and had some fun.

But in the interim years, I had become a church history major.

I learned a lot about all these amazing things I walked right past in Rome.

So when we got a chance to go back, I told her,

let me apologize to you in advance.

I'm going to run you ragged all through this city because I want to see everything about the early church in Rome.

And one of the things I was most excited about seeing were these catacombs just outside the city of Rome.

The largest catacombs we know about.

And catacombs were places where early Christians would dig out these underground layers to bury their dead

and then also in times of persecution to seek refuge and to worship.

And when I went, I was kind of thinking underground cave.

I didn't realize this catacombs was four stories built out underground, a massive labyrinth of places to bury those who had passed away

and to worship and flee from persecution.

But when we got there, you kind of show up in this field and everything you're about sees underground.

So you would kind of wait in line and a tour guide would come up as people pooled up,
