The Defense of Taiwan, I welcome Nadia Shadlow writing most recently at the Wall Street Journal.

She is a fellow at the Hudson Institute and Hoover Institution, served as Deputy National Security

Advisor 2017-2018. Taiwan is under threat constantly from the mainland, rhetorical threat, and provocations, flyovers, aircraft,

ships, all kinds of moving around, sometimes time to a visit from the United States, sometimes just because they feel

like it, as in the recent elections.

However, Nardia, a very good evening to you.

Your recent visit to Taiwan, you were in Taipei the capital. Is there a sense of urgency in

Taiwan among the officials? There's a transition underway. The new president

will take authority in May. However he is now the vice president will take authority in May.

Are they in haste?

I think my sense is yes, there is a sense of urgency, but what really

came out from my trip was a sense of the difficulty of actually maintaining a status quo.

So I was struck by the sense across my meetings of the Taiwanese interest in
