G. Chang. And we're joined by our colleague at the Heritage Foundation, Stephen Yates. The headline from

Taipei is both alarming and puzzling.

Exclusive, Taiwan fears Beijing is taking independence crackdown overseas.

The first paragraph tells a traveler to be warned.

Taiwan is considering warning citizens about risks of traveling to countries with strong ties to China,

such as Laos and Cambodia, as they could be caught up in Beijing's campaign against Taiwan independent supporters,

according to a senior Taiwan official.

Steve, good evening to you. This is entirely unknown to me. What does it describe? Good evening.

Good evening, John. It's a combination of a series of transit have existed for some time.

But I think it is getting amplified and accelerated more in recent months and years.

It is an effort of political warfare, revisionism on the part of the Communist Party of China,

trying to suggest that there is some kind of hostile movement against them, as opposed to people who've gone about their everyday lives and struggled for their own freedom and self-government

and going out into the world to work.

But in China's near abroad, in Southeast Asia, and the two countries mentioned Laos and Cambodia,

China has significantly increased its influence.

And they have had a very permissive environment to police ethnically Chinese people and some others who just speak their mind

in ways that might be critical of China on human rights or national security terms, but

definitely going after anyone who is from Taiwan or speaks of Taiwan as anything other than a vassal

of the CCP. And so in some ways, it's same old, same old political warfare from the CCP.

But I think this internationalization is more muscular and it is weaponized in social media and other ways.
