On this episode of 5 Minutes in Church History, Dr. Stephen Nichols introduces us to Tacitus, a first-century Roman historian and one of the first references to Christ outside of the New Testament.

0:05.4 | and let's look at the work of the Roman historian Tacitus. |
0:08.8 | Tacitus was born in 56 or 58, and he died in 118. |
0:14.0 | He was an orator, a lawyer, served in the Roman Senate. |
0:19.0 | He appears to have some sort of role in Germania |
0:22.0 | and served there in the province and he was a writer. |
0:26.7 | He's known to us as one of the historians of this early century, the first century of Rome. |

0:39.6 | He starts with Augustus Caesar in 14 AD, and he ends with Domitian's death in 96. |

1:11.7 | remains from the Annals is book 15. This tells the story of Niro's |
1:16.5 | reign from 62 to 65. This is a very important time. This would coincide with Paul's imprisonment and as church |
1:25.6 | tradition tells us it was likely Nero who would have overseen the martyrdoms of |
1:30.8 | Peter and Paul. Well in this time period of 62 to 65 there was a |
1:36.5 | very important event the burning of Rome and as Tacitus tells the story there is |
1:42.2 | the idea that Nero himself was responsible for the fire. |
