Summary

“They could have gone in one of two directions,” says author Lacy Crawford. “Either start asking real questions and listening for honest answers and face the reckoning of what these boys had done to me. Or go the other direction and bury the girl. And that’s what they did: They buried the girl.” In Crawford’s memoir, Notes on a Silencing, she shares the story of the assault she suffered at boarding school when she was fifteen years old and the subsequent attempts to silence her. Today she joins host Elise Loehnen to talk about misplaced shame, our perception of bravery, addressing a destructive culture, and how her definition of healing has shifted with time. Don't hold anything too tightly. Just wish for it, want it, let it come from the

intention of real truth for you, and then let it go. For me our soul is like it's

unbound, it's limitless, but we will use words to limit ourselves. When people

stop believing that somebody's got your back or Superman's coming, we turn to

ourselves and that's where you become empowered. Courageous participation attracts positive

culture changers, creatives, founders and CEOs, scientists, doctors, healers and seekers,

here to start conversations because simply asking questions and listening has the power to change

the way we see the world. Today is no exception. I'll let Elise fill you in on her extraordinary guest.

All right, over to Elise. Our guest today is author, Elisey Crawford, who just published a stunning

1:11.3

memoir called Notes on the Silencing. In it she shares a harrowing, heartbreaking and important

1:17.1

story of the assault she suffered when she was 15 years old while attending St. Paul's boarding

1:21.5

school and the school's subsequent attempt to silence her. Today we talk about how the school's

1:27.2

grave mishandling of her assault was just as traumatizing as the assault itself. The ways this

1:32.9

kind of abuse becomes parts of systems and normalized and she shares quite possibly the most

1:38.3

beautiful explanation I've heard of what healing means to her. For context, I also attended St. Paul's

1:44.7

and Elisey was five years ahead of me. I'm so thankful that she shared her story in her memoir

1:49.7

and that she joined us to discuss it today. People have said to me so much that I'm brave

1:56.0

for telling this story and I know that comes from a place of generosity and grace and I receive

it as such. But why? Why is it brave to tell the story of what they did to me? I didn't do anything

2:09.3

wrong, right? So what we're anticipating all of us is the shame that I must feel and that is the

2:14.8

shame that they put into me, frankly. I mean, with a violation of my body, a violation of my
