A lot has happened since writer E. Patrick Johnson first came on the podcast a decade ago to talk about his groundbreaking book, Sweet Tea, a collection of more than 60 life stories of gay black men who were born, raised, and continue to live in the South.

Johnson's book won various literary awards, got turned into a solo stage show which he performed,

and now it's taken up a new life as a documentary film, Making Sweet Tea, which shows some of

the book's subjects as they brew up a fresh pot of sweet tea

and chat about their lives. Today, Dr. E. Patrick Johnson joins us to talk about his new documentary

film, Making Sweet Tea, which is currently making the rounds at film festivals.

And I would always say in the sweetest little voice because you see I'm reasonably soft-spoken now.

Leave me alone. I'm minding my business. Don't bother me. And this boy ran up to hit me and I cut him across the shoulder with my

razor blade. By that time the teacher came back. She said, you boys better go home. The last

thing I heard him say was, you're a mean little

sister. I'm going to have your ass locked up. I went home. I didn't say anything to my mother.

And bravely the next day, I went to school, and the same boy came up to me, and he had a

hairline cut across his shoulder because I had cut through two or three layers of clothing.
