1:01.0 | It focuses on the African American crew on the World War II Cruiser, Yosasas, Indianapolis. |
1:09.0 | The title of the book is Heroes in the Shadows, |
1:12.4 | and the subtitle is the untold story of the African-American sailors aboard USS Indianapolis. |
1:18.6 | Now, there are 28 African-American sailors on the cruiser when it was sunk. Not one survived. |

In fact, I had been associated with the cruiser survivors for almost a decade before I learned that, you know, that not any of them survived because nobody, no relatives of the African Americans were coming to the reunions and so on. And in fact, everybody knows the story of Dory Miller. Dory Miller was a crew member on the Indianapolis. He didn't die on the Annapolis. Sadly, he died on another ship. But the point I'm making is this't a very underreported story. |
