Summary

This week Seth and Bill take a step back to 1942 and look at the somewhat audacious, somewhat foolhardy Makin Island Raid of August 1942. Colonel Evans Carlson and his 2nd Raider Battalion, Carlson's Raiders, launched an audacious, ferocious and extremely hazardous raid behind enemy lines on Makin Atoll in August of 1942. Hailed as a success by the American press at the time, the team breaks down whether or not it really was as successful as originally said to be.

Hello and welcome to episode 216 of the unauthorized history of the Pacific War podcast.

0:17.8

My name is Seth Parrottan, historian and deputy director here at the Mississippi Armed Forces Museum in Camp Shelby. And with me, as always, it's my esteemed co-host, retired Navy Captain Bill Toadie, former skipper of the Fast Tech submarine U.S.S. Indianapolis, former Commodore of Submarine Squadron 3 in Pearl Harbor and many other postings. How are you this morning, Bill? Doing great, Seth. You know, I'm amused by some of the comments we're getting from viewers, listeners, about

0:42.3

things like, you know, my goatee that I had in the very first few episodes and wanting

0:47.9

me to grow it back.

0:48.8

And my wife has nixed that, but to head off any comments about my glasses, yeah, I'm wearing glasses now.

0:56.2

You know, the stories and my eyes went bad when I was at the academy kept me from being an

1:00.7

astronaut. I was nominated for an astronaut mission specialist back in the day, but my vision was

1:05.7

too bad. The problem with glasses is that you make it hard to look at a periscope so when i was

1:12.0

commodore the navy decided look if you're a submariner we're going to give you this lasic surgery

1:17.3

which i got and it was great for looking at the periscope because looking out through with glasses

1:22.9

is not fun um and that was what uh 17 years ago And over time, my vision started to gray it again.

1:31.2

So if you see pictures of me when I was CEO of the submarine, I'm wearing glasses. When I'm

1:36.0

Commodore, I wasn't. And now I'm wearing them again. So if people are curious about that,

1:41.6

yeah, there they are. Not not happy about having to wear them.

1:46.6

I've been very lucky in that I've always been blessed with eagle eyes, but I can't hear worth a damn.

1:54.7

So you've got to give something to get something I find, you know, and such as it is.

2:00.1

My hearing is always

2:02.1

sucks and now my vision sucks just as bad yeah my wife makes up for it because she's blind

2:07.1

and she's got dog hearing so you know we make a good team so yeah before before we get started
