his latest book which is this one includes his philosophical views on our place in the universe and how we should relate to it

well thanks very much for having me on

so in your book the big picture you put together a few ideas in science and in philosophy you put them together and you try to make sense of them all

and you kind of gave an idea of how we should believe what we should believe and how we should be talking about these different things

most notably you put forward the idea of poetic naturalism could you tell us briefly about it

sure you do like to emphasize when we talk about the book that it sounds very grandiose I'm putting together a whole bunch of things

but there are many questions I address in the book that I don't think we have the final answers for

what I'm trying to point out is that we have a way of thinking about the framework into which these answers must fit

and you know whether you're talking about physics or philosophy or biology or cosmology

it's the same universe you're describing and we should have ways that are consistent with each other

so poetic naturalism takes that picture into account naturalism is the idea that there is one world the natural world

that we can discover by looking at it and poetic says but there are many ways of talking about the world

and all these ways might be real at the same time we can talk about chairs and tables
