Summary

Jason Featherstone joins us to discuss Surviving our Streets, a violence prevention organisation that focuses on reducing serious-street and gang-related violence, how a "Violence Interrupter" (VI) is a highly trained, street savvy individual and why his organisation is attempting to implement these same concepts in the British prison system.

Happy New Year homies. This is London Real. I am Brian Rose and when the new year comes I think of one thing and that is

0:09.7

My list of goals. Yes, this is the time of year where I try to write out my goals for the next year.

0:16.7

I try to keep it simple. I recommend three and I write these down and basically stick them up in my mirror so every morning when I get up and brush my teeth I can take a look at them.

0:29.0

I'm a big fan of setting goals. I try to get all the people around me to set them and drive them

0:34.3

crazy in doing so. I really recommend you do it. I think it's a great way to

0:40.1

push yourself and without setting goals it's a really hard way to quantify any achievements.

0:45.8

So a few tips if you want to do this, what I find the most important thing about a goal is to make

0:51.5

it quantifiable and by that I mean to make it specific

0:55.5

in what you want to achieve and when you want to achieve it. So for example a goal of

1:00.9

I want to be rich isn't one that you can really ever attain because it's not

1:06.4

specific and there's no timeline. So a better goal would be I want to save 10,000 pounds in my bank account by September 30th.

1:17.0

That's a goal that you can basically be doing something every day in order to get to that goal.

1:22.0

You can not be spending. you can be looking for new work

1:24.2

you could be working extra hours to try to get that promotion so you know that's a good

1:29.5

quantifiable goal another goal that's not so great is I want to be fit.

1:34.0

Again, it's very hard to actually to tell when you've actually achieved that.

1:39.0

So a better one would be say I want to bench press 100 geez by June 30th and that way you know

1:45.7

that every day you can be doing something you can be eating better that day you can be

1:51.3

arranging a training partner that day or you can be lifting.

1:54.3

So it's like you can always be something.

1:56.3

I find that most people's goals break up into the three things people think about the most,

2:00.2

which are relationships, health, and yes, cash money.
