We all have something we’re clutching that we don’t want to let go of. In this episode, we break down the story of the rich young ruler from Mark 10 and explore what it really means to surrender to Christ.

A young man runs to Jesus asking, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” He’s moral, religious, and doing everything right. But Jesus looks at him with love and puts his finger on the one thing standing between him and the kingdom—his wealth. The man walks away sad.

This week, we're taking a break from our study through Matthew to talk about something we all struggle with, which is surrender. We're looking at the story of the rich young ruler from Mark, excuse me, 10. This will be just a single episode and then next week's episode will
0:25.6	jump back into Matthew 27. So a young man comes running to Jesus and asks, what must I do to inherit
0:34.5	eternal life? He's moral, religious, and doing everything right. But Jesus
0:39.4	looks at him, loves him, and puts his finger on the one thing standing between him in the kingdom,
0:45.4	which is his wealth. The guy walks away sad. Before we think this is just about rich people,
0:53.6	Alex is going to show us why this story is actually about all of us, and we all have something we're clutching onto that we don't want to let go of.
1:02.5	So grab your Bible and let's jump in.
1:05.7	We are in Mark chapter 10 looking at verses 17 through 22. Let's read. And as he was setting out on a journey,
1:17.6	a man ran up to him and knelt before him and began asking him, good teacher, what shall I do to
1:24.0	inherit eternal life? And Jesus said to him, why do you call me good? No one is good
1:29.4	except God alone. You know the commandments. Do not murder. Do not commit a joltry. Do not steal.
1:35.3	Do not bear false witness. Do not defraud. Honor your father and mother. And he said to him,
1:41.9	Teacher, I have kept all these things from my youth up.
1:46.0	And looking at him, Jesus loved him and said to him,
1:49.4	one thing you lack, go and sell all you possess and give to the poor,
1:53.8	and you will have treasure in heaven.
1:56.8	And come follow me.
1:58.8	But at these words he was saddened, and he went away grieving, for he was one
2:03.8	who owned much property. Thank you. Amen. There is an illustration that you might have heard before.

2:20.1	And to catch them, they will hollow out a coconut and put rice inside.
