So here's a question. What words should we use to describe the federal response to the killings of two American citizens in Minneapolis, Minnesota?

The White House is using words like more relaxed to to describe its approach in Minneapolis after federal agents killed intensive care nurse Alex Preti Saturday morning.

The president said his agents were de-escalating.

And to prove it, he banished Border Patrol commander Greg Bovino and brought in his own immigration guy, Tom Holman, to figure out next steps.

But as far as I can tell, there's still plenty of active anti-immigrant activity.

In Minneapolis, in Maine, school officials in Ohio warned just this week.

They've started planning for a surge of immigration

enforcement there, too. The impact has been more, I would say, rhetorical than actual.

David Dan has been monitoring all this over at the American prospect. He says the data is pretty clear.

Trump's surge of immigration agents has not been popular.

Certainly within the country, there's been a big shift.

But I think they are calibrating that they can make the mildest change possible and win the favor back, at least of their core base.

The impact in Minneapolis, as far as I can tell, is zero.

That there are still plenty of operations.

ICE is still being plenty belligerent.

Two days or three days after the death of Alex

Pretti, ice agents stormed the Ecuadorian consulate in Minneapolis.

Which is not legal. Yeah, which, by the way, footnote is not legal.

So if you're a Democrat, here's what you're looking at, an administration that is trying to

appear responsive to public concern while clearly doing whatever it wants.

And the thing is, right now, these Democrats have a little bit of leverage.
