The Supreme Court will hear arguments today over Mississippi law that bans abortion after

15 weeks.

The case is seen as a direct challenge to Roe v. Wade.

According to the Associated Press, both sides are telling the Supreme Court there's no middle

ground in this conflict.

The justices can either reaffirm the constitutional right to an abortion or wipe it away altogether.

Even if the court overturns Roe, this would not make abortion illegal in the U.S.

Rather, as Mississippi's Attorney General notes, such a decision would

return the issues to the states where citizens can act on hard issues through the men and women

they elect and can hold accountable at the ballot box. Pro-life and pro-abortion advocates have been

preparing for such a day for years.

Twenty-two states have passed laws that would outright ban or severely limit access to abortion

in the event Roe was overturned. Fourteen other states have passed laws that would explicitly

protect the right to abortion. The issue would be contested largely on partisan lines,

since a supermajority of Democrats support keeping abortion legal,

while conservative Republicans favor making it illegal.

Since the court's ruling is not likely until next June,

it will undoubtedly play a significant role in the
