Summary

Aaahhh, the joys of catching a cold. Not the "oh it's chilly outside.", but the "my nose is stuff and I'm miserable." That all too familiar chill that takes over your body; it's something we've all experienced. Although a seemingly trivial thing, this cold can represent much more than what meets the eye - it can be symbolic of inner turmoil and emotional struggles. Listen in as we connect these two things together. Examining how emotions play an integral part of our lived experiences and use them as insight into how to better manage difficult times. Join me on a journey exploring the parallels of how mental health is more common to the common cold than you think.

I had an entirely different episode scheduled for today, and at the last minute, I decided to take

0:06.0

a detour. I mean, that's life. Anyway, yes, detours. Unexpected turns give us something

0:13.1

a little different, maybe a different view of the highway, a different perspective. But the reason

0:19.9

why I turned left is twofold. First, I have a cold at the

0:26.1

moment, which you can probably hear in my voice. Yes, a cold, which let's be honest, it is a podcaster's

0:34.3

worst nightmare. Our voice is everything. It's our fingerprint delivered in sound

0:42.4

waves painted by a microphone. I actually record backup episodes in advance just in case something

0:50.5

comes up, such as a cold or a last-minute performance or something, and one would think

0:56.7

that this would be the time to drop in such an episode, but I'm not, which leads me to the second

1:05.7

reason why. Mental health.

1:14.5

Yeah, okay. I'm not really following you, Chad.

1:19.4

I mean, this podcast has always been about mental and emotional health.

1:23.6

Well, I had an email this morning from someone that said,

1:30.5

where I live, we don't talk about mental health. It's just something that we keep to ourselves,

1:38.6

something that we just have to work through on our own. They went on to thank me for all the things that we talk about here on the podcast. I have to be honest, it broke my heart, truly. So to the emailer, whose initials are

1:48.1

MA, this is for you and for everyone else that wishes we could talk more about our emotions.

1:58.1

It's interesting. We can so easily talk details about a physical illness, like a cold or a flu,

2:06.6

yet we often tip to around discussing our emotional and mental health. If we have a cold,

2:14.3

it says if everyone has been there before. Oh, goodness, they say.

2:19.0

I'm so sorry to hear that.

2:20.7

And then the list of all of their suggestions begin.

Have you tried herbal teas?
