Hello, I'm Gordon Carrera, the BBC security correspondent.

And over the next hour, I'm going to be looking at acts of subversion between Russia and the West.

First, the view from the east.

It is an extraordinary allegation that from the Kremlin behind me here in Moscow

Russia tried to influence America's presidential election

and help put Donald Trump in the White House. It's a claim that's been hotly

contested but it is only the latest chapter in a much longer story.

A story going back at least a century in which both Russia and the West

claim the other side has tried to undermine or subvert

their political system.

This week we look at the view from Russia.

I've just returned from Moscow and among those I've been meeting are people who've played key roles in its

intelligence services. Forget Trump, their view is that they have been the victims

of subversion, attempts to sow dissent and stir up opposition, the culprits, the West and especially Britain.

Their story reaches back a hundred years when the Bolsheviks sees power in October

1917.

Britain and its spies are determined to overthrow the new government

which was no longer supportive of the war effort against Germany

and seemed dangerous in its revolutionary ideology.

Surprisingly, evidence for Britain's clandestine activity in Russia can be found in the BBC

Archives, recorded more than 50 years ago. I went along to the house of a friend of mine where I hoped I would be able to find refuge for the first night.
