Summary

The Bible says that wives should submit to their husbands, but that Scripture should never be used in an abusive way. This is especially true if trust in the relationship has been harmed by a pornography addiction. John, Greg and Erin address when biblical submission is misused and how community can help a marriage that's been shaken by a porn struggle. Featuring Mrs. Rosie Makinney.

I think it's fair to say that one of the most misunderstood passages in Scripture is

0:09.8

first Peter, chapter 3, in which Peter says, wives, submit to your husbands.

0:16.9

And if I've got your attention, stay tuned, we're going to have some clarity for you today.

0:20.9

I'm John Fuller, joined by my focus colleagues, Aaron and Greg Smalley, and the two of you

0:26.3

have been, I'm sure, around people that have totally misconstrued or misapplied that passage.

0:32.4

Yeah, truly. I see this when men use that idea of submission to control, to dominate his wife,

0:41.5

I hear it like, no, I'm the one that has to make the decisions. And that is not on any level

0:48.5

what God meant when he's talking about submission. As a matter of fact, submission isn't

0:55.8

blind or quiet obedience. Aaron has so many amazing gifts and talents. Her intuition is usually

1:05.6

99.9% spot on. That's how we make the best decision within our families that we utilize her

1:16.6

strength and my strength. And we come together and make decisions based on both of us, both of us

1:22.3

matter. And so I, not to mention, never in the Bible is a husband told that it's your job to make

1:29.6

sure your wife is submitting. I mean, that is not quite the contrary. Paul wrote that we're supposed

1:35.2

to die for our wife. I mean, that's Aaron submitting is between her and the Lord. That's her

1:40.8

voluntary choice. And she needs to work that out with God. That's never my job to go, oh,

1:45.8

you just need to submit never. I mean, on many levels, we open up to get worse here, smack

1:52.4

upside my head. But that's just that's not who I am. That's not the rule of a husband. I appreciate

1:56.8

that clarification. Yeah. And it's so important for as a wife to be so connected to God that I allow

2:02.6

him to guide my heart, to lead my heart to places, to keep my heart soft. And that's between me and

2:09.6

God. And so I love what Greg is saying that it's never a husband's job to demand submission,

2:16.6

because I know as a as a wife, that causes me to feel unsafe, like I don't matter. And it can lead

2:24.3

a woman to a place of bitterness and resentment granted. That's between her and God. And if that's
