Summary

Romans 10:1-3 — Since the inception of the church, Christianity has battled the false belief of justification by works. In its modern Western form, many wrongly understand the gospel to mean going to church, doing good, or being a “nice” person. In this sermon on Romans 10:1–3 titled “Submit to God’s Righteousness,” Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones proclaims that the current Christian culture continues to preach self-righteousness, self-reliance, and self-dependence. In its primitive form, the apostle Paul holds up the Pharisees as the prime example of those who are zealous for doing good works and yet are ignorant of what God’s righteousness requires in the gospel. Their lack of knowledge has set them against the God they claim to serve. They would rather construct their own righteousness than submit to the righteousness of God found in the gospel of Christ. The Pharisees, and many today as well, are trapped in believing they can save themselves. The problem, says Dr. Lloyd-Jones, is that the last people to believe the gospel and be saved are always those who think that they can save themselves. What is needed is the gospel of grace. What needs to be known and heard is the truth of what the Scriptures say God’s righteousness requires. Listen as Dr. Lloyd-Jones speaks of the tendency towards justification by works and the remedy, submitting to the gospel of grace.

I am going to read once more the first three verses of the tenth chapter of Paul's epistle to the Romans.

Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they might be saved.

0:15.4

For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.

0:21.7

For they being ignorant of God's righteousness and going about to establish their own righteousness,

0:28.8

have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.

Now, we've been examining these three verses, two or three weeks, and we are doing

so, of course, because it is one of these crucial statements in this great epistle, and a very

0:49.3

vital and essential part of the Apostle's whole argument. We are particularly concerned at the moment

0:55.0

with this statement about the Jews to the effect that though they had a zeal of God,

1:02.0

it was not according to knowledge, that their trouble was due to the fact that they were ignorant

of certain things. That's why this great tragedy had taken

place that the Jews, we would have expected to have been the first people to enter the kingdom

1:19.6

and to constitute the majority of the kingdom are in the main outside the kingdom, whereas

1:25.6

the Gentiles have gone in.

1:28.8

And here the Apostle is giving us an extended exposition as to the causes of their tragedy.

1:37.0

But now we are particularly concerned with this emphasis upon lack of knowledge, ignorance.

1:48.1

And we are emphasizing that for this reason.

1:55.6

It is, as I say, the sole explanation of the state and the condition of the Jews at the Apostle's time and even up until today. Secondly, it has continued throughout the centuries to be the main stumbling block to all people,

2:08.6

and especially those who are phariseical by nature.

2:12.6

I mean by that people who take their religion seriously and who are concerned about being religious and

2:19.9

pleasing God.

2:21.5

This has been the main stumbling block to all such people ever since and is still the main
