Summary

Romans 10:3 — What was the main trouble with the Jews that Paul is speaking about in Romans 10:3? It is that they did not have a complete and full knowledge of the truth of God. In this sermon on Romans 10:3 titled “Knowledge of the Truth,” Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones says that a precise knowledge of the truth is essential to salvation and Paul is praying and longing for the salvation of the Jews because they lack this knowledge. The Jews may have been nice people and very zealous, but this cannot be mistaken for true Christian faith. Truth cannot be based in subjective terms because the gospel is truly objective. The Pharisees had misinterpreted the Old Testament teaching about the righteousness of God and the righteousness that He demands. This was ignorance on their part. Ignorance means that there is not full knowledge and the Jews were ignorant of the full knowledge of God. This stood in between them and their salvation. Dr. Lloyd-Jones urges the listener to have a precise knowledge because ignorant knowledge is the enemy. Without true knowledge, one will be lost, damned, and outside the kingdom of God.

We come this evening to a consideration of the third verse in the tenth chapter Paul's epistle to the Romans.

0:08.5

For they being ignorant of God's righteousness and going about to establish their own righteousness

0:15.5

have not submitted themselves to the righteousness of God.

That, of course, obviously follows on from what he has been saying in the first two verses,

0:28.7

for it's introduced by the word four.

Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they might be saved, for I bear them

0:40.9

record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. For they being ignorant

0:47.6

of God's righteousness and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto

the righteousness of God. Now, we've been dealing with the first two chapters, first two

1:04.0

verses, and we've been doing so in the sense that we have seen that there are certain big general lessons taught there by the

1:14.4

apostle not only concerning his contemporaries, the Jews, but certain lessons and principles

1:22.6

which are of universal application in the life of the church and which we have seen are as true

1:29.1

tonight as they were when the apostle first wrote these words 1900 odd years ago.

1:36.3

Now, we have drawn our general lessons, but after all, the apostle's particular concern here

1:43.0

was to show and to explain why the Jews

1:48.4

in the mass and in the main were outside the Christian church, whereas the Gentiles had

1:56.0

been coming in. And he goes on here to put it before us. The general trouble was that they had a zeal of God,

2:07.1

but it was not according to knowledge. Now, the word that he used here, which is translated,

2:15.6

knowledge, is a very interesting one and a most

2:18.9

important one in the understanding of what the apostle is saying here. It is the strongest

2:25.6

word that is used in the scriptures with regard to knowledge. It means a full, a correct, and a vital knowledge. It doesn't merely mean a general

2:39.7

acquaintance with something. It goes beyond it. It is a full knowledge. Indeed, it can be
