The ocean doesn't have a size limit.

When we talk about animals who live in the open ocean,

we're talking about an environment where there basically isn't such a thing as being too big.

You don't have to worry about maneuvering.

You can be the size of a school bus and still have plenty of elbow room.

And the intensely carnivorous nature of the open ocean, the lack of hiding places,

might even allow you to make the argument that extreme size is more advantageous

and not merely less disadvantageous.

This is how we end up with whales and great white sharks and giant squid, right? We get in an environment that allows for them and encourages them. But when we

talk about our planet's freshwater, when we talk about lakes, rivers, and streams, we're talking about places

with boundaries, and likely places to conceal oneself while in reach. Size here has serious

trade-offs. In these arenas, there is a limit to how big you can get while still winning the battle for survival.

There is a practical size limit.
