Summary

Stuart Gibbs is this week’s guest and begins what we intend to be a periodic look at children's’ literature, or in the parlance of the day, “kids’ books”. Stuart has five different series of kids’s books in print - all successful, each aimed at the middle grades. His latest Spy School book is just out. Kate and I (grown-up who like to believe) loved it, as did our 12-year-old grandson and nephew, Lang (but then Stuart is his favorite author). To be a successful author of kids’ books we believe you have to be a good writer as well as a bit of a kid yourself. Stuart checks both boxes. Welcome to the bookcase. I am Kate Gibson.

0:05.6

And I'm Charlie Gibson. We welcome you back to the bookcase. And in this cast, we are calling all mothers and fathers, particularly of kids between the ages of I would say eight and 14 or 15. And Kate will tell you why.

0:19.8

We have the prolific children's author

0:22.6

of Stuart Gibbs on the show today. And I'm so excited to have him on the show. He's written so

0:28.1

many books that not even he is sure how many he has written. He believes when we come to the end of

0:33.5

the calendar this year, he will have released 28. I'm not going to check him on that,

0:38.2

but that's what he says. He has four or five different series going at the same time. There's

0:43.4

once upon a Tim about a young kid's quest to be a night that probably skews in the eight to 10-year-old

0:48.4

area. There's the Moon-based Alpha series about families who live on the moon because NASA's

0:53.7

testing out the viability of that.

0:55.5

There's spy school where the CIA recruits kids to be spies in like middle school age.

1:01.6

There's fun jungle where there's a kid who lives in the country's biggest zoo with his two

1:06.0

zoologist parents and he solves mysteries about the animals. There's Charlie Thorne, who's a female middle

1:11.8

schooler who travels around the world and solves mysteries. I mean, if those elevator pitches of

1:17.2

those series don't sound like books that your kids would want to run out and read, then they just

1:21.6

need a better sense of excitement. And when we said that Stuart Gibbs was coming on the podcast,

1:32.6

there was one response that was particularly important to me and to Kate.

1:37.9

My grandson Lang, is now 12, is just Stuart Gibbs' biggest fan. And whenever he sees a new Stuart Gibbs book, and there are a lot of them coming out sort of rapid fire. He gets it,

1:45.7

he reads it, and he loves it. So Kate and I are both in better stead with my grandson now,

1:52.2

in better repute than we were before, because Stuart Gibbs is with us.

1:56.2

I don't ski. I don't play baseball. I haven't quite fit into Lang's Wheelhouse yet. So the fact that I've gone up and as estimation by having on an author he loves for me is very exciting.

2:07.4

And we told Stuart Gibbs we wanted to do this podcast and air it at a time that he had a new book coming out. And he said, well, I have so many books coming out. I'm not exactly sure when I should tell you to put it on.
