What's going on everyone? Welcome back to the show. Today we're going to get a little bit in the weeds, pun intended, and talk about seed germination. And so we're going to get a bit deep, right?

0:13.0

Because I think that understanding some of the botany,

0:16.0

some of the science behind it,

0:18.0

can help you understand why we need to do things

0:22.0

certain ways when it comes to gardening.

0:24.6

And so we're going to talk about some different ways that seeds germinate.

0:29.4

And one of the first cornerstone pieces to know is that seeds are not dead.

0:36.6

If they were dead, they would not be able to germinate.

0:39.9

They would not be able to come back, quote un unquote to life. People who have studied

0:44.4

seeds and how they work actually notice that there is metabolic activity

0:49.3

within the seed while it's dormant, although it is so slight that it is almost

0:54.4

indetectable. So in that sense a seed is still alive because there are still

0:59.6

chemical processes going on in that seed even though it may be dormant for tens of days,

1:06.3

tens of months, and sometimes even tens or even hundreds of years. And so that is

1:11.3

something that I find absolutely fascinating that something could be

1:14.9

dormant and alive for a hundred plus years and still germinate. So we're going to talk about three different things.

1:22.4

Soaking seeds, scarifying seeds and stratifying seeds.

1:26.5

So these are some confusing topics mostly because they all start with S and scarification and stratification sound very similar, right?

1:35.6

And so first let's go ahead and talk about scarification.

1:38.8

Seeds have hulls and these hulls often need to be punctured in some way or damaged in some way in

1:46.6

order for water to get in. As we know without that water or gases, some sort of gas exchange, a seed will often never leave

1:58.3

dormancy, it will never germinate.
