Summary

In this episode, I sit down with a recent college grade in the thick of decision-making and action-taking as he embarks on his career. He has great questions about what to do first and next. This applies to anyone looking to pivot toward their dream role or career, or exploring something new.

When exploring what steps we can take to support starting a new career, it’s critical that we get out there. It takes a lot more than wishful thinking.

In this episode we talk about:

- The importance of sharing our dreams with family and friends.

- Tasting different things to find what’s good.

- The power of personal projects.

- How to deconstruct your dream job with a real example.

- We walk through loads of scenarios and examples of actions that lead to a new career.

Enjoy!

Hey everybody, what's up? Welcome to a new episode of the show. Today's show is, I promised to

0:06.0

experiment with some formats. And today's show is a new format. It is something I have done a long,

0:11.7

long time ago, but something hasn't been a part of the regular show flow for some time.

0:15.0

And this is a Q&A with a student. This student is a recent graduate, and I found, A, the conversation

0:23.5

really inspiring and interesting because hearing what questions students and people who are

0:30.2

entering the creative industries or entrepreneurship have was inspiring and cool. But what I found

0:36.5

is that this is really, really applicable.

0:38.3

You don't have to be a student going into the first-time career that if you are interested in rebooting your career or entering a new discipline in the not too distant future,

0:49.3

it was my hope to orient this conversation around value for, you know, sort of either of those camps.

0:56.8

Now, the student's name is Iwan Wong, and Iwan, as you'll learn, is just graduated from college.

1:03.6

And is, like many of us, at any intersection, right?

1:08.2

We get stuck.

1:09.1

We want to, you know, do the right amount of planning,

1:11.8

but, you know, how do we plan from, you know, do we do this exercise from the couch? How do we

1:16.9

put ourselves out there? It is a, I think, in part inspiring, in part illuminating around the

1:26.1

questions that he asks and also, you know, I think some of the answers that I'm, you know, was providing here have come from having this conversation over and over and over with all sorts of different, you know, different students of different backgrounds or people starting new careers. And it was fascinating to understand that there are a handful of very simple and yet effective

1:48.8

prescriptions.

1:49.9

So having heard these questions before and tracked so many of these folks that I have

1:55.6

originally had these interactions with over the course of many, many years and found out

1:59.1

what advice worked and what didn't.

2:01.0

So it's my hope that you will enjoy this conversation between yours truly and a student,

2:06.6

UN long.
