Summary

Welcome back to Practice Underwater, where Dr. George Hariri helps Tom map out a plan for sustainable dental practice growth.

After scaling his clinic from $1.1 million to $1.65 million , Tom realizes that true sustainable dental practice growth requires optimizing dental practice management rather than working grueling 10-hour days and half-staffed Fridays.

They debate the merits of expanding his clinical procedure mix versus adding a third hygienist using the Dental Moneyball approach to boost dental practice ownership and overall efficiency.

This is a must-listen for any owner looking to achieve sustainable dental practice growth while radically reducing their clinical hours to prime for a future group practice transition.

In this episode:
- Cutting unproductive Friday shifts immediately.
- Transitioning from 10-hour to 9-hour workdays.
- Adding a third hygienist to boost efficiency.
- Growing top-line revenue without expanding procedures.
- Priming a solo clinic for a future group practice.

Whether navigating an associate to owner transition or vetting acquisitions in dentistry, this is your survival guide. Ready to scale your dental practice ownership?

Welcome back to practice underwater.

We are back with part two of our practice underwater with Tom.

0:09.0

And Tom is our dentist up north.

0:12.0

And if you listen to part one, this one was amusing.

0:15.0

I ended it with this idea that no two are the same,

0:18.0

practice underwater's.

0:19.0

And I really feel that very strongly. I think

0:21.2

I haven't found myself normally. I'm not very conflicted. Normally, so I ask a lot of questions at the beginning. That's why I love about being anonymous. I can just ask questions. And, you know, Tom bought a practice. He was doing about $1.1 million, about five years ago. It's grown the practice, about 1.65, good healthy take home.

0:39.5

And, you know,

0:40.4

Tom is in the middle of paying off student loan debt. Tom's clinical mix is primarily bread and butter,

0:46.0

doesn't do a lot of implants, does some endo and extractions, healthy new patient flow. And, you know,

0:51.5

the core issues were that, you know, Tom was working eight to six, so four tens and also Friday eight to two. And, you know, that was not necessarily in line with how Tom wants to live his life. And so, you know, I think that that was definitely one thing. And then the other thing is I think Tom has a desire for a group practice, but doesn't know where that fits in.

1:15.8

And so, you know, I found myself really just kind of grappling with these different things that were at odds.

1:24.9

And I think that from my standpoint, the thing I really wanted to convey to Tom is that, you know, we need to build the practice around your life, right?

1:27.7

Your life needs to be the driver behind how we make decisions at the office. And, you know, that's where I think we kind of left with our goals,

1:32.5

which is, you know, we want to do well financially, of course, but we also want to work Monday through

1:37.5

Thursday, 8 to 4 and, you know, have kind of the schedule and everything be lined up to have the same income,

1:45.0

maybe on more desirable hours. And so Tom, welcome back to practice underwater. Just wanted to

1:50.6

kind of jump right into our conversation today. So anything you want to share with our audience

1:54.7

where we jump right in? No, I think you summed all that up pretty good. Awesome. I have some practice.

2:18.1

So I guess if we're going to kind of jump right in, you know, the thing I'm really interested in first is you have five operatories right now and I really want to figure out what's going on day and day out in the office. So kind of walk me through the five operatories. How are they used? What's your team size? You know, just kind of help me understand that. Sure. So we have two admin at the front and we have an office manager. So three admin in

2:26.3

total. Yeah. Yeah. And two of them are full time and one of them is their kind of Tuesday,
