Daily Boost Podcast Show Notes Stop Working on Your Life (Do This Instead) August 21, 2025 | Episode - 5164 Host: Scott Smith Episode Description Scott shares wisdom from an unexpected roadside conversation during his North Carolina motorcycle trip. When a young rider asked for life advice, Scott delivered three game-changing insights that'll flip your perspective on personal growth. This episode tackles the biggest mistake people make when trying to improve their lives. You'll discover why working harder isn't the answer and how focusing on less actually gets you more of what you want. Featured Story During a motorcycle stop in North Carolina, a 25-year-old rider approached Scott with a simple question: "I'm working on my life. Do you have any advice?" What followed was an impromptu coaching session that revealed three powerful principles for real transformation. Scott's response surprised the young man and challenged everything he thought he knew about self-improvement. The conversation covered why most people stay stuck and the counterintuitive approach that actually works. Important Points Stop working on your life and start working on yourself—you are both the problem and the solution. Embrace doing what you love even when you hate parts of the process, because meaningful achievements require effort. Apply the 80/20 principle by eliminating busy work to focus on the 20% that truly moves your life forward. Memorable Quotes "You are the biggest roadblock you've ever known. You can't block me anywhere near as good as I can block me." "Everything you want external to you, internal to you, everything you want around you comes when you start working on yourself." "More is on the other side of less. It's impossible for you to get everything you want at the same time." Scott's Three-Step Approach Get specific about what you want instead of asking generic questions that get generic answers. Dedicate time daily to working on yourself through learning, reading, meditation, or reflection. Eliminate 80% of your current busy activities to focus on the 20% that truly serves your goals. And because my love language is sarcasm, a few wise cracks along the way as well, just for entertainment purposes only to keep you engaged, all right? But you know, I took that motorcycle trip last week in North Carolina. I had a great time, and I got in lots of conversations because that's what happens. You ride on a motorcycle for several hours, all by yourself. Then you stop and you talk to all kinds of cool people that you never have seen before and you will never see again. all be safe all right you hit the road again and you just keep doing it's cool and at one particular stop i had a question asked to me because a kid overhearby talking about the stuff i do for a living i'm going to share that with you today about a question that he asked me it is a daily boost my name is scott smith good to have Thanks for stopping by today. I know it's a busy time of the year. So many people getting back to school, last minute vacations happening, all that stuff is going on. And summertime is coming to an end, which is why we have a hurricane out there in Atlantic right now. In Florida, we know that August is when we start to get hurricanes. And we also know there's a pretty good chance that it's going to go to the outer banks and it's going to hit North Carolina. If not, it'll hit New Orleans. But it's summertime when it happens. So, anyway, hope you're all okay if something does happen there. So, yeah, I was up riding a motorcycle. I was up in North Carolina riding around in Tennessee and we're hanging

out at some, I don't even know where it was. But I'm talking and the guys I'm with, I don't really know what they do for a living. A couple of them I did. The others I didn't. So we're talking and it gets on the subject of what I do. And I tell them I do a podcast. Oh, great, man. What is it? Because I'm going to listen on my motorcycle and my headset. I'm thinking,

2:32.1

oh, God, I don't want you to listen to me on the road.

2:34.8

What we're talking about that a little bit and what my job is like and how my, you know, how does that happen? How do you actually have a podcast and actually make a really good living to do it? How does it work? Okay, well, we asked about that stuff, right? So what ends up happening is after the conversation happened, this kid comes over to me.

3:03.8

He had overheard us. I did not know this guy. He's probably 25. Probably rode a rice rocket. He wasn't a Harley guy. All I'll talk to him. I won't salute him on the road because he's not on a Harley. I know. I'm a boomer. I just don't do that. Nonetheless, he came over and he said, can I ask you a question? I said, yeah.

3:24.2

He said, I'm ask you a question? I said, yeah.

3:33.8

He said, I'm working on my life. Do you have any advice? Now, the question is almost impossible for me to answer as a coach guy that does this. That's a real generic question that is going to get a

3:40.3

generic answer. And it's hard for me to pinpoint. So I would immediately usually go into like pinpoint mode and kind of figure out what the heck are you really talking about, right? Which is why most people that ask that kind of question, has this happened to you? I'm working on my life. Why is it not being fixed? Well, it's not specific enough to do it. If you get more specific in your question, you will get a more specific answer.

3:59.3

There's a little advice for you right there.

4:00.7

Don't ask that question.

4:01.6

But anyway, I'm working on my life.
