Summary

Mind reading is when we make assumptions about what others are thinking or feeling. The problem is, these presumptions can put us in a position of believing we know what is true, when in fact we are guessing. We can then attach ourselves to stories that we are creating and see them as reality rather than assumption. Mind reading can essentially get us into trouble so it's important that we catch ourselves when we are doing it and work to correct course.

LESSONS:

  • Mind reading occurs when we make assumptions about what someone else is thinking.
  • Two ways to move away from this are:
    1. Catching yourself when you find yourself mind reading.
    2. Circling back to the individual that you find yourself attempting to mind read and asking for clarification on what it is you may be assuming.

The thing about it, though, is that it's really

0:26.2

a completely pointless exercise,

because unless you're a psychic or a medium

0:31.0

that actually has those abilities,

0:33.0

we can't ever know what somebody else is thinking

0:35.5

unless we ask them what they're thinking, right?

0:38.3

Now, yes, you may have friends or family, partner,

0:40.8

spouses who you have a general idea of what they're thinking most of the time some of the time maybe right but generally speaking we have no idea what's in somebody else's mind. But when we make assumptions about it

0:54.4

and engage in mind reading,

0:56.3

it can actually put us in positions

0:58.0

to impact our behavior and affect our feelings

1:01.2

in ways that aren't helpful.

1:03.0

So let me give you an example of that.

1:04.7

Let's say you've signed up for your first Spartan race.

1:08.0

Awesome, way to go.

1:09.4

But at work, you decide to tell a colleague, a trusted colleague, and the first thing out of their mouth is,

1:15.0

oh, really?
