Thank you for being here and thank you for believing in yourself.

The year was 1997. Brett and I had been married for about two years. We had one child that was Brock.

0:24.0

Now I grew up watching Infomercials in QVC. I grew up in the Midwest and it's kind of just one of those things that we did in the 80s and 90s.

0:34.0

So I watched a lot of Tony Robbins on late night TV. I watched him on QVC. My dad always had business books. He had books by Dale Carnegie. He had other great books that were really motivational.

0:46.0

And a few business books. He had a book by Tony Robbins and I remember when I was in college, I read I think it was unlimited power. One of his early books.

0:56.0

But social media just wasn't a thing then podcast didn't even exist. Isn't that crazy to imagine I can't imagine that today because I get so much of my self education through podcasts, through audio books, through YouTube videos.

1:12.0

I mean, everything online, even watching people's IGTVs, but not really dating myself back then really the only way I remember taking in personal development was by listening to AM radio or by actually reading books, not just listening to books like reading books.

1:31.0

And Tony was one of those books that had a pretty profound impact on me. So now I'm flash forward married for two years, living in a house that we can barely pay for.

1:43.0

But also knowing like, how do I get out of this? How do I make my life better? How do I learn to focus? That was my really big question.

1:51.0

But having ADHD, I just couldn't finish a project. I couldn't stick to something long enough. And whenever I wanted to do something bigger, I would become overwhelmed by the process.

2:02.0

And I would start it and then easily get distracted or lose my confidence because all the steps became too overwhelming.

2:11.0

I knew I had to learn how to do something I didn't yet know how to do. I knew I wasn't dumb, but I was also very aware that I didn't have the skill.

2:21.0

So when I saw this seminar was coming to town, California, it was an Anheim, California, and the price of the tickets were actually affordable. I know they were under 100 bucks.

2:31.0

Now granted they were the nose bleed seats, no joke. I remember a bird flying by. I was sitting next to my friend Denise Williams who went with me and Brett went with me too.

2:41.0

It was the first time I'd ever seen people who were where I wanted to be speaking and sharing their knowledge. I remember sitting there thinking, this can't be true.

2:51.0

And by that I meant how and why? Why are these people explaining exactly how they've done what they've done? Like why are they sharing all of their secrets? That just blew me away.

3:04.0

Now today we might take that for granted again because of social media and podcasts and all this information.

3:09.0

But to my knowledge to that point in my life, the only access I ever had to people teaching live in public and in person was when I was in college and we were learning about philosophy and democracy and like really boring things, not like specifically about how to change your life and how the steps, the exact steps like where to start and how to do this and how to structure your day and like literally right down to the nitty gritty habits that I needed to learn.

3:37.0

Before I left that conference, I actually invested in audio cassette trainings from Brian Tracy. Yes, cassettes and I drove around in my Jeep Cherokee and I listened to those cassettes over and over and over again to the point that his words I started to believe they were my own like I hate to say this but I sometimes have total empathy when I hear that like a certain author is plagiarized someone like, okay, like I'm not excusing plagiarism but like there have been times where I've accidentally quoted Brian Tracy.

4:06.0

And I've quoted him so many times that then I suddenly can't remember like wait a second, is that Brian Tracy's quote or is that my quote I digress listen when I left that event.

4:16.0

I didn't know was a life changing event. I would have told you I was good. It was good. The power of it really didn't sink in for years to come.
